WHAT IS MUAY THAI?Muay Thai sometimes referred to as Thai boxing, the Art of Eight Limbs[3] or the Science of Eight Limbs, is a Thai martial art and full-contact combat sport that uses stand-up striking, sweeps, and various clinching techniques. This discipline is known as the "Art of eight limbs", as it is characterised by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins.

I'M NEW TO MUAY THAI?We all started somewhere. This could be a new beginning for you as well. you do not have to worry. The class is designed for Novice all the way to advance. Werther your here to get healthy or looking to go competitive or be part of a team, we have your back.

DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE TO TRAIN MUAY THAI?No. You don’t need to be in shape to train Muay Thai. Anyone who wants to train can. Muay Thai instructors take pride in getting their students into the best shape of their lives, and training sessions can burn up to 1,000 calories per hour. This means your fitness level will increase exponentially once you start training Muay Thai. You’ll get to lose weight while building your arsenal of Muay Thai techniques.

I DONT WANT TO BE A FIGHTER, IS MUAY THAI RIGHT FOR ME?Many people who train Muay Thai have no intention of ever fighting professionally. People train for various reasons such as learning how to fight, getting into better shape, or simply wanting a new hobby. You’ll learn how to defend yourself regardless of if you plan to compete when you train Muay Thai, and you’ll be in pretty good shape. Muay Thai also does wonders for stress relief. It serves as destructive therapy, a practice that involves taking out your frustration on inanimateobjects.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING ON MY FIRST LESSON?For your first lesson please wear something comfortable to train with and also bring a bottle of water. A T-shirt and shorts or jogging bottoms preferred. Since your going to hit pads a lot, if you have your own boxing gloves please bring them as well. Apart from that you wont need anything else.

DO I NEED A UNIFORM?In Muay thai we use traditional muay thai shorts. You can buy your own one or you can get one from the dojo. You will also need to purchase boxing gloves, shin guards and a mouthguard including hand wraps later on if you want to train comfortably. You can start by wearing something comfortable for now, there is no requirement for any uniform. The dojo does have it's own T shirts, Shorts, Hoddies and vest you can purchase directly but this is not a requirement. We also have gloves and shin guards you can use until you can get your own ones.

WHAT GEAR WOULD I NEED TO BUY?To begin with you do not need to buy anything until your sure Muay thai is for you. Eventually you’ll need to purchase a mouthguard, and hand wraps, a pair of boxing gloves even though we have spare gloves for newbies. Boxing gloves soak up lots of sweat during training sessions so it’s typically better to have your own pair for increased hygiene. As far as attire is concerned, a t-shirts and Muay Thai shorts. You can wear any pair of shorts that allow you to throw kicks freely. shin guards, and groin guard for men. The club has its own T shirt and other gear we can supply from our suppliers to save you money.

DO WOMEN TRAIN MUAY THAI?It's a very common question and the answer is yes. Girls and women are typically about a third of many Muay Thai gyms. It’s an excellent martial art that helps to toughen and strengthen them. There will be other women for you to spar with, and you’ll enjoy your sparring sessions with the guys just as much. Muay Thai culture encourages a gentle approach to sparring that focuses on executing techniques properly over landing strikes with power.

DO I NEED STUDENT INSURANCE?No. Student insurance by law is not mandatory. We do not force it on students unlike other martial arts clubs. It is optional and we can provide it directly through our insurance for as little as £5 a year. Please speak to your coach who will provide you with the details.

IS MUAY THAI GOOD FOR SELF DEFENCE?Yes. Muay Thai is one of the best martial arts for self-defence. You learn how to attack with your elbows, punches, kicks, and knees, and how to defend against such attacks. You learn how to fight in the clinch, and how to trip and throw opponents. Muay Thai teaches you everything you need to know about striking, so you’ll be able to defend yourself against most people. Add some grappling training to your routine, and you’ll be a well-rounded fighter who can fight standing up or on the ground.

WOULD I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN SPARRING?Sparring is part of muay thai and so we would add sparring on our sessions, however it will be controlled sparring. You wont be expected to spar on your first lesson. We will also be looking to dedicate 1 hr lesson a week purely for sparring. If you do not feel comfortable sparring you can speak to your coach who will provide alternative training ie. pad work whilst the others spar.

ARE THERE ANY COMPETITIONS I CAN JOIN?Yes. Through our club you can join inter clubs, novice fights and work all the way to professional fights.

DOES NAK SU MWY BELONG TO AN ASSOCIATION?Yes. We are part of the British Martial Arts and Boxing association. All our instructors are vetted and fully Qualified. They hold an up to date enhanced DBS certificate, First Aid certified, lead safeguarding qualifications, Level 1 and 2 Instructor Qualification, SENC Qualification and have a lot of experience in Muay thai.

CAN I CANCEL MY SUBSCRIPTION AT ANY TIME?Yes, if you think that muay thai is not for you than you can cancel your membership but please let your instructor know first.

WHAT IS NOT ALLOWED IN MUAY THAI?Headbutting, eye-gouging, biting, and striking the groin area with a knee is not allowed in muay thai and especially in our sparring sessions. Other techniques (Unless your in the advance category) such elbows or spinning back fists
